2 star Hostal Agua Alegre (Happy Water) is oozes Mediterranean charm with a tropical foliage-filled terrace on which to sip your cafe con leche. Located in the neighbourhood of l´Eixample, an elegant residential area, 2 blocks away from the über chic Passeig de Gràcia, and 10 minutes by foot to Plaza Catalunya. A leisurely walk of 15 minutes will take you to the historic city centre in which you can bump into the magnificent Palau de la Música or Catedral de Barcelona. Oops, did we forget to mention Casa Batlló and La Pedrera? If you are walking-averse or simply tired, there are plenty of metro, regional train and bus stations nearby. This hostel is situated in a a turn of the century Modernist building, and has been completely reformed for modern-day comforts. Closer to the hostel are several intriguing Gaudi structures including La Pedrera (also known as Casa Mila), Casa Batlló (which was nicknamed the bone house because of the shape of the columns in front of the first floor windows) and finally Gaudi’s masterpiece, Sagrada Familia Cathedral is not far away. The hostel has been completely renovated and is located in a residence built at the turn of the century. The staff at the Agua Alegre reflect the friendly name of the hostel, and will make you feel right at home. The rooms are unique, decorated with their own particular style, and are painted with ornamental details. They are spacious with high ceilings which are characteristics of this kind of building. There are rooms with or without en suite bathrooms, and the latter are brand new, clean and roomy. A communal living room is available for the use of all guests.
